Up-Down Install aftercare: first 2 weeks of do’s & don’ts
By Sew Me Hair Salon | October 22, 2026
Kansas City, MO (Brookside / Waldo area)
People come in telling me, “Kyla always do a great job… have me looking fabulous, ” and I want you feeling that same confidence when you leave with your Up-Down Install. The single biggest rule is simple: wait at least 48 hours before you wash. Those first two days decide how clean the parts stay, how flat the tracks lay, and how long the style keeps that fresh look.
Kansas City weather doesn’t play nice either. Humid summers can puff and frizz fast, and dry winter air can have your scalp begging for moisture. This guide gives you a clear, realistic plan for the first two weeks so your install stays neat and your natural hair stays protected.
First 48 to 72 hours: keep it dry, keep it calm
Quick rule: No washing for 48 hours. No heavy sweating for 72 hours. No tight ponytails that pull at the perimeter.
Right after your Up-Down Install, the goal is to let everything settle. I generally recommend you keep your hands out of the hairline, leave the tracks alone, and avoid “fixing” the style every hour. Constant pulling and re-parting is how an install starts looking old in week one.
If you have to be out doing school drop-offs, commuting, or running around Brookside Boulevard, plan for sweat control. Skip intense workouts for 72 hours, and if you do get a little damp, don’t ignore it. Use a cool setting on your blow dryer and dry the base thoroughly so you don’t end up with that musty smell near the tracks.
Sleeping the first nights (this matters more than people think)
Sleep with a silk scarf or bonnet and, if you can, a silk pillowcase too. Try not to mash your head straight into the pillow. Side sleeping is usually gentler on the top and helps the style hold its shape longer.
Days 3 to 7: keep that “fresh wash” feel without actually washing
One thing I hear a lot at Sew Me is how good people feel after a real wash. I get it. “The wash was fantastic, I feel refresh, ” is exactly the vibe. In week one, you can still keep that clean feeling without soaking the install too soon.
My week-one routine for most Up-Down Installs
- Wrap nightly with a scarf or bonnet so you wake up smoother, not frizzy.
- Use a light leave-in or braid spray on your natural hair only, focusing on any exposed sections.
- Oil goes on ends only, and a little goes a long way.
- Detangle with a loop brush, and don’t brush right into the track area.
Kansas City humidity can swell hair fast, especially in summer. If the hair starts getting puffy, resist the urge to pile on heavy products. That’s when you get buildup, dullness, and tangling. Keep it light and dry the base whenever moisture shows up.
And if you’re thinking about a tight slick ponytail in week one, pause. That extra tension can stress your edges and shift the install quicker than you’d expect.
Week 2: your first wash, without loosening the install
After you hit that 48-hour mark, you can wash when you actually need to, but I still like you to keep it gentle in week two. The biggest mistake I see is rough scrubbing and letting water sit at the base. That can create matting and odor, and it can shorten how long the install lays flat.
How I recommend washing
- Use a sulfate-free shampoo. Focus on the scalp and exposed natural hair.
- Massage with your fingertips, not nails. No aggressive scratching.
- Rinse thoroughly and squeeze water out of the hair. Don’t twist hard.
- Condition lightly, mainly mid-length to ends. Avoid heavy conditioner sitting at the base.
- Dry the base fully. Air-drying sounds nice, but damp tracks are where problems start.
If your scalp runs dry in Kansas City winter, you can moisturize without greasing everything up. A lightweight leave-in and a tiny bit of oil on the ends usually does the job better than heavy pomades.
Products that keep an Up-Down Install looking “done” (not weighed down)
I keep product advice simple because most installs don’t need a whole shelf. You want clean, light, and consistent. Heavy layers of product make hair tangle faster and make the base harder to dry.
Shampoo: Sulfate-free, so you’re not stripping your scalp and creating extra dryness.
Leave-in or braid spray: Lightweight moisture for your natural hair and any exposed sections, especially when the air gets dry and windy.
Oil: A small amount on the ends only. If your hair looks shiny but feels heavy, that’s too much.
If frizz pops up, a little heat on a low setting can help, but keep heat tools away from where the tracks sit. Protecting the base is what keeps the whole style looking natural.
Maintenance check at 2 to 3 weeks: tighten tracks before they start shifting
I’m big on maintenance because it keeps your install looking consistent. Plan on a 2 to 3 week check so I can tighten what needs tightening and check on your natural hair. After that, most people do maintenance every 4 to 8 weeks, depending on hair growth and lifestyle.
I serve Kansas City and nearby suburbs like Raytown, Independence, Grandview, Lee’s Summit, and Overland Park, so follow-ups are easy to keep up with. And yes, I know life gets busy. I’ve had clients mention I’ve stayed open late for them, and I try to keep options that work for real schedules.
Reach out sooner if you notice slipping tracks, itching that doesn’t calm down, persistent damp smell after workouts, or tangling/matting near the base. Small issues are quick to fix when you catch them early.
If you’re in the Brookside / Waldo area, a lot of people like stopping by around other errands and shops nearby. Keep your maintenance consistent and your install stays “I just got it done” longer.

My biggest do’s & don’ts recap (save this for later)
Do
- Wait at least 48 hours before washing.
- Sleep with a silk scarf or bonnet and use a silk pillowcase if you can.
- Dry the base fully after sweat or washing.
- Come in for a 2 to 3 week maintenance check.
Don’t
- Don’t do heavy sweating for 72 hours if you can avoid it.
- Don’t overload product at the base or on the tracks.
- Don’t brush aggressively near the tracks.
- Don’t ignore moisture after swimming or hot tubs. Dry it right away.
One last thing: Your Up-Down Install at Sew Me includes a free shampoo, trim, and style when you walk in. Protecting your aftercare means you get to enjoy that fresh, finished look longer between visits.
